Adopted School
The Margaret Stokes IODE has adopted the St. Peter’s School in Black Tickle, Labrador since 1989. Our adopted class this year is the grade two/three class with teacher, Madeline Keefe.
Each year we send parcels so that the students receive them for Easter, June (end of school), Halloween and Christmas.
Our knitters create hat, mitten, and sweater set for each student in the adopted class. Most parcels contain crafts, books, decorations and treats. We find that the postage for shipping the parcels tends to limit the contents.
What does the IODE send?
The Adopted School Committee Chairperson of IODE Margaret Stokes Chapter is in touch with the principal of St. Peter's School and receives a wish list. Sometimes the list has only school items but we try to send some fun things also. Cake mixes, icing, Halloween items and Christmas gifts are some of the favourite things. In the past we have arranged through Canadian Tire to send sets of cross country skis. We have sent computer programs, small children's handheld computers for learning phonics and letters. Sometimes small learn to read books are included.
Every Christmas, a gift of hat, sweater and mitts is sent for each child in the primary classes. Volunteer knitters are thanked for this contribution.

Where is Black Tickle...
Black Tickle is a small fishing village in on the eastern coast of Labrador. It has limited access and in winter may be reached only by small planes or snowmobiles. Their only store is a General store and mail orders. This limits what may be purchased. Costs of goods are very high due to transportation.
