Education Awards IODE Margaret Stokes Chapter
Special 75th Anniversary Award in 2024... a Sewing Machine
Dawn McNally, President of IODE Margaret Stokes Chapter here in Petrolia and on behalf of the chapter and Marie Sharp, had the pleasure of presenting the IODE Margaret Stokes Chapter 75th Anniversary Fashion Arts Award to a student study in fashion arts at LCCVI with an interest in continuing improving their skills in sewing as a part of their future. The winner will receive a sewing machine with many accessories to get them set up to start using their machine upon receiving it. Just need to add fabric!
In 2024, IODE Margaret Stokes Chapter celebrates its 75th Anniversary. In 1949 a group of area women gathered and started this chapter with a common thread that was to improve their community through education support, community service, and citizenship programs. They have given many awards to students at the elementary schools in Petrolia and at LCCVI. This is the first Fashion Arts Award.
Marie Sharp, a former LCCVI student who received an education award had not forgotten winning an IODE Margaret Stokes Chapter Award and had generously donated $750 to the chapter. Marie excelled in her studies and was awarded a bursary worth approximately $125. Marie attended Teachers College after graduating This award enabled her to have $5 per week spending money while she was in college. That doesn’t seem like a lot of money today but in 1967 $5 went a long way. Marie was so thankful and never forgot IODE for giving her that award and what it meant to her to be recognized.
In 2023 Marie donated $750 to IODE Margaret Stokes Chapter to commemorate their 75th anniversary. The monies were to be used to purchase a sewing machine for a student studying Fashion Arts at LCCVI so they may use the machine to further their skills in designing and constructing many hand made projects throughout their life, and perhaps, even pursue a career in the fashion arts industry. Marie was unable to attend this presentation but sends her congratulations to the recipient.
We were able to purchase this lovely sewing machine at the local quilt shop and fabric store, The Stitcharie, now located in downtown Petrolia because of Marie’s generous donation.
Sarah Land is the recipient of the 75th Anniversary sewing machine. Congratulations Sarah, we were very impressed with your skills and your ability to design and create unique pieces of clothing. Your smocking work was outstanding as well as your embroidery work. Your ability to take fabric scraps and turn them into beautiful pieces of clothing was exemplary. We hope this machine brings you many hours of pleasure as you create your masterpieces! Enjoy your new machine.
